How the roofing calculator works

You cannot measure a roof from the ground with a tape — but you can measure the footprint it covers and multiply by a factor for the slope. The steeper the roof, the more actual surface sits above that footprint. Roofers then work in squares: one square is 100 square feet of roof, and shingles are sold by the bundle, with three bundles making a square for most architectural and 3-tab shingles.

Formula: footprint (L × W) × pitch factor = roof area, then roof area × (1 + waste%) ÷ 100 = squares, and squares × bundles-per-square = bundles.

The multiplier is just the geometry of the slope: √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12. A 6:12 roof has 12% more surface than its footprint; a 12:12 (45°) roof has 41% more. Enter your footprint, pick the pitch, and the calculator handles the rest.

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof area — the unit roofers quote and order in. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares. Shingles are sold by the bundle, with three bundles making a square for most shingles.

How many bundles of shingles do I need per square?

Most architectural and 3-tab shingles come three bundles to the square (100 sq ft). Heavier designer or luxury shingles can be four or five bundles per square, so check the wrapper — this calculator lets you set the bundles-per-square.

How do I calculate roof area from the ground?

Measure the footprint the roof covers — length × width — then multiply by a pitch factor for the slope: about 1.12 for a common 6:12 roof, 1.20 for 8:12, and 1.41 for a 12:12. The factor is √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12, which gives the true sloped area without climbing up.

How much extra should I add for roofing waste?

Add about 10% for a simple gable roof, 15% for a roof with hips and valleys, and up to 18% for a complex, cut-up roof. Valleys, hips and dormers create offcuts, and you want full bundles left for ridge cap and repairs.
