Where things stand

As it stands today, ShovelMath carries no affiliate links at all. Nothing on this site earns a commission right now. This page is published ahead of the first one so the rules are on the record before there is any money involved, and so you can hold the site to them afterwards.

How a paid link works

An affiliate link is an ordinary link with a tracking code on it. If you follow one and then do business with the company at the other end, that company pays ShovelMath a fee. You pay nothing extra — the price is the same as it would be if you had typed the address in yourself. The fee comes out of the advertiser's marketing budget, not out of your pocket.

Some programmes pay for a completed purchase, some pay for a qualified enquiry. Either way the payment happens after you act, and the site is told a conversion occurred — not who you are or what you typed into a calculator.

How they are marked

• Every paid link appears inside a bordered block headed Ad, with the disclosure printed above the link rather than buried at the bottom of the page.
• Every paid link carries rel="sponsored nofollow noopener" in the HTML, which is the signal search engines ask for and the one a network's compliance team checks.
• Paid links only ever appear beneath a calculator, in the place where you have just worked out a quantity. They are never woven into the explanatory text, the formulas or the density tables.

What the money does not buy

This is the part that matters, so it is stated plainly:

• No formula, density or waste factor is ever chosen because of a commercial relationship. The methodology is public on the about page and the numbers are checkable by hand.
• No advertiser gets to review a page before it is published, and none has editorial input into what a calculator says.
• A calculator is never added because a programme pays well. Pages are built for search terms real people use, and the question of whether anything can be monetised is asked afterwards, if at all.
• Nothing is gated. Every result is visible whether or not you touch a link.

Advertising

ShovelMath may also display ordinary display advertising to cover hosting. Ad networks set their own cookies under their own policies; what that means for you, and how to opt out of personalised advertising, is covered in the privacy policy.
